There has been a bit happening at the town centre lately. Oporto has opened their new store. Mani Asian grocery store has opened where the Hub was located. Little San Severo closed down and will be replaced by Gungahlin Thai Kitchen.
Also in the building housing the Abode Motel there is Sirens bar and restaurant which has now opened.

New Gym, Bar, Real Estate Office and Pool

There has been a lot happening since I updated the news section here on the Gungahlin Business Directory, at least in the Yerrabi Pond district. Just recently we saw the Curves gym for women open its doors, the Fu’ Bar cafe & bar opened in what was previously Wise Elephants and Andara Homes/Leisure Pools setup an office just along from Curves.

Over at Forde the Tinytots swimming center is getting close to being ready. Check back soon as I will update here when it opens.

Elders Real Estate opened an office on Anthony Rolfe Street, it is hard to miss as they have a big flashing sign out the front.

The Party Hive launched their website in early February and Noble Style is getting close to launching an e-commerce site.

Big Success for Cold Rock Ice Creamery

Coldrock icecream GungahlinHaving gone to Cold Rock Ice Creamery for an ice cream I have seen just how successful the opening of the new store has been. Even when not actually going to the store I have walked past and seen most of the time a queue going out the door with people waiting to place an order.

I read today on www.dynamicbusiness.com.au how the Cold Rock store at Gungahlin is the most successful in franchise history for an opening week. According to the article more than 2500 people were in the store on opening day and up to 8000 enjoyed some ice cream during the opening week. This came at a time when there was plenty of wet weather. I think they will need to expand to cope with the rush once some hot weather hits Gungahlin.

They say part of the secret for the success was radio advertising and a Facebook page which boosted awareness. Looking at the stats here at Gungahlin Business Directory I think we played a part in the opening week success. We have been getting hundreds of hits on the listing page and had a listing on here for a few weeks before the launch. Well done to Cold Rock.

Homebase Discount Store

The Homebase Discount Store has recently opened in what was the Video 2000 shopfront. For those of you new to Gungahlin and now sure where that was, it is shop 2 in the Marketplace. It is located on the carpark side of the building and offers discounted products just in time for the Christmas shopping period.

Chiang Rai Piri Piri Restaurant

Chiang Rai Piri Piri Restaurant has closed. A Korean restaurant called Arirang is opening in the same location soon.

The Cook and Grocer

The Cook and Grocer has closed their shopfront. They say on a notice on the door that they intend to run the catering business from a different location in 2011. They also plan to keep a website for the business. They closed due to a change in personal circumstances and a need to for on other priorities.

Coldrock Ice Creamery

Coldrock Ice Creamery recently opened here in Gungahlin. I have passed by a few times thinking I might try some ice cream from there however it is always packed, even with all the rain and cooler weather it is not stopping people from getting some ice cream in Gungahlin.

On Saturday December 4 I walked past  and saw that people were lined up outside the store waiting to place their order. It has been a huge success so far.

Dick Smith Electronics

Dick Smith Electronics moved their store from the corner opposite the Raiders club up the road into the Aldi building. They are just down from Priceline. Today I was in the store and it looks good. I was checking out their range of televisions as mine blew up last night. It was 13 years old at least. One of the old CRT giants, weighing in at 60kgs.

Connexus Health and Massage

Connexus Health and Massage which was located down near Yerrabi Pond has closed. I gave the owner a call to see if they had relocated. Karen said she was at the end of lease and an offer to work with some GP’s in the city came up so she decided to make the move. Karen hopes to return to Gungahlin with her business in a few years.

National Broadband Network Gungahlin Community Consultation

The Gungahlin Community Council welcomed representatives from the National Broadband Network to their meeting at Palmerston Community Centre on Wednesday October 13. The meeting also included the Annual General meeting for the GCC.
Russell Gillon, who ran the ACT Broadband campaign was voted President and replaces outgoing Alan Kerlin.

What all who attended (around 125 mostly males) wanted to know is just where will the Stage 2 rollout of the NBN, which includes Gungahlin take place. It has been flagged that around 3000 homes will have the cabling rolled out past their front door. If they give consent the cable will also go to their house.

Glenn Holdstock from NBNCo.com.au gave a presentation and answered questions. Unfortunately he could not say where the rollout would take place. Earlier in the day he had spent time with ACT government discussing the rollout which is expected to commence in April 2011.

Other interesting item raised was the possibility of a third hospital being built in Gungahlin. With population forecasts it is clear that the current hospital system will not cope with future demands so a third hospital is a strong possibility.

The NBN team will probably be back in Gungahlin in a month or two.

Gungahlin Swimming Pool

Here is an update about the swimming pool expected to be built at the Gungahlin Town Centre next to the new Gungahlin College.

The working group are just finalising the feasibility study report, and the outcome of this study will feed into the detailed design process. They are to tender for the design consultants in the next few weeks, and hope to have the design completed about the end of this financial year. They will be bidding for construction funds in the 2011/12 budget but it is too early to say if this will be successful. When the project is funded, work will probably take around two years to complete. On that basis, it would be at least 2013 before it is operational.

Until then Gungahlin residents have the option of going to Gold Creek or traveling to Dickson, Civic or Belconnen.

Medicare Office Has Moved

Medicare-Centrelink Office Gungahlin

Medicare-Centrelink Office Gungahlin

The Medicare office has moved from the G Building and is now co-located with Centrelink. It is across the road from the Library at the back of the Marketplace building.

Address: Corner Ernest Cavanagh St and Gungahlin Place.

The Hub – Closed Until further notice

The Hub Gungahlin closed until further noticeWith a Chinese wife, the Hub at Gungahlin was for a few years a favourite shopping destination. Over the past few months we noticed a rapid increase in prices and as a result we stopped shopping there. Dickson is back as the place to go from Gungahlin for our asian grocery shopping.

Tonight I was walking the dog and went to the Gungahlin Town Centre and noticed that the Hub has a closed until further notice on the door. After searching the net it looks like the Hub closed down in early August. I had noticed that the owners were having a big garage sale recently. Not sure if the two events are related.

It will be interesting to see if someone will buy the shop. I noticed that they have not cleaned out the shelves so it may re-open.
